🌿 Ultra-Rare Live Asian Colony: Never sold before in the mainstream market! The ultimate "Holy Grail" for hardcore keepers. We strictly offer highly vetted species endemic to Asia. Fast and secure international delivery via premium Air Express.

⚠️ CRITICAL PRE-PURCHASE NOTICE (READ BEFORE BUYING)

  • The ONLY Captive-Viable Army Ant: Make no mistake, while notorious army ants (like Eciton or Dorylus) are impossible to keep and will rapidly die in artificial setups, Aenictus stands alone as the absolute ONLY true army ant capable of long-term survival in captivity.
  • "One & Done" Mating (Unlike Normal Army Ants): A massive misconception is that army ants require non-stop, continuous mating from nomadic males to survive. This is FALSE for Aenictus. Just like standard ant species, the queen mates only once early in her life, permanently storing the sperm to reproduce for her entire lifetime. She never needs to mate again!
  • Extremely Energy-Consuming: This is NOT a low-maintenance pet. The keeping process is incredibly exhausting and demands immense time, relentless daily dedication, and zero margin for error. If you cannot commit intense energy to their precise daily care, DO NOT buy this ant.
  • NOT A Blind Box (Contact Us First!): We do NOT do random blind box shipping. Because these are highly exclusive, wild-sourced colonies, our inventory fluctuates. You MUST contact us directly to inquire about exactly which Aenictus species we currently have in stock before we finalize any arrangements.

Species Overview: The Asian Aenictus Complex

Aenictus spp., commonly known as Double-Node Army Ants, represent the absolute pinnacle of myrmecology keeping. We exclusively source our colonies from the diverse subtropical and tropical regions of Asia. These are true, obligate army ants. Unlike standard ant species that utilize visual cues, they are completely blind, entirely nomadic, and operate through a highly complex, pheromone-driven swarm intelligence that coordinates thousands of individuals as a single superorganism.

Workers are completely monomorphic (lacking major or soldier castes) and relatively tiny, typically ranging from 3.0 to 5.0 mm depending on the exact species. While they possess a stinger that acts as a lethal, paralyzing weapon against their natural insect prey, it is incredibly microscopic and completely harmless to humans, generally incapable of piercing human skin.

Species Roster (Inquire for Current Availability)

As stated above, this is an exclusive internal channel, not a random draw. Please message us to ask which of the following Asian species are currently available in our live inventory:

  • Aenictus fuchuanensis (Fuchuan Double-Node Army Ant): A highly elusive, subtropical endemic species known for its tightly coordinated raiding columns.
  • Aenictus camposi: A slightly smaller species that forms highly active, manageable swarms, frequently documented by advanced Asian keepers.
  • Aenictus dentatus: Renowned for its highly aggressive nature and remarkable predatory efficiency during the nomadic phase.
  • Aenictus ceylonicus: A widely distributed Asian species capable of forming massive, awe-inspiring swarm fronts.

Natural Ecology & Unique Biological Traits

Nomadic & Statary Phases: They do not dig permanent nests or chambers. They alternate biologically between active raiding phases (nomadic) and resting phases (statary). During the statary phase, workers link their tarsal claws and bodies together to form a living, architectural temporary nest called a "bivouac," protecting the queen and the incubating brood within a dynamic matrix of living ants.

Reproduction via Fission: Because the queen is permanently wingless (ergatoid) and holds a lifetime supply of sperm from her initial mating flight, the colony does not need to accept new males. Instead, when the colony reaches a critical mass, they reproduce through "colony fission"—the swarm literally splits into two distinct, independent armies moving in different directions.

Rigorous Keeping Guidelines (Zero Margin for Error)

Enclosure & Habitat Setup: Traditional ant nests (acrylic, 3D-printed, gypsum, or test tubes) will 100% fail and lead to rapid colony death. They require a large, secure outworld-style tub (minimum 30x20x15cm). You must add a 1–2 cm layer of slightly moist coconut coir or peat moss. Provide abundant surface cover—such as sterilized cork bark, dry oak leaves, and flat stones—allowing them to seek shelter and construct their natural bivouacs.

Microclimate Control: Maintain a highly stable, subtropical thermal gradient of 24–28°C (75–82°F) using a side-mounted heating mat controlled by a high-precision thermostat. Ambient humidity must remain strictly at 65%–80% RH. Lightly mist the substrate periodically to keep it slightly damp. Total desiccation is rapidly fatal; a dry outworld will kill the swarm within hours.

Escape Prevention (Critical): Because workers are tiny and incredibly adept climbers, a broad, meticulously applied escape barrier (fluon/PTFE) on the upper rim of the enclosure is absolutely mandatory. Lids must be fully secured at all times.

Dietary Restrictions (Obligate Myrmecophagy)

The Ultimate Feeding Challenge: They are highly specialized predators. The core diet MUST consist of the live brood (eggs, larvae, pupae) and workers of other small ant species (e.g., Tetramorium, Pheidole, or small Camponotus brood). You must cultivate and maintain a constant, unbroken supply of live feeder ant colonies. Without this continuous influx of specific prey, the Aenictus colony will inevitably crash.

Strict Feeding Warning: Do NOT feed sugar water, honey, or seeds. They are purely carnivorous and lack the biological imperative to consume carbohydrates. Sugars will be completely ignored and will only trigger lethal mold or mite outbreaks within the humid substrate. All uneaten organic matter must be removed within 12 hours.

Advanced Care & Transit Risk Management

Vibration & Photophobia: Being totally blind, they navigate the world entirely via chemical trails and are severely stressed by vibrations, physical disturbances, and sudden light changes. The enclosure must be kept in the dark as much as possible. Frequent handling or viewing will cause the queen to undergo severe stress, cease egg production, and ultimately trigger colony collapse.

Transit Acclimation & Expected Mortality: Due to their extremely small size, high metabolic rate, and natural stress response to shipping, a worker mortality rate of around 50% during transit is completely normal, mathematically expected, and factored into the species' biology. Do not panic upon unboxing. The survival and regeneration of the swarm depend entirely on the health of the queen and the core brood. Upon arrival, place them immediately into their dark enclosure and leave them completely undisturbed for 3–7 days to stabilize before offering prey.

Our AntNook Promise & Legal Notice

  • Premium Air Logistics: Fast, specialized Air Express shipping to supported international destinations.
  • Verified Viability: Every starter colony is rigorously inspected by our experts prior to dispatch.
  • Ironclad LAG: Swift store credit or replacement if transit viability is compromised beyond the expected worker loss threshold (subject to our strict 2.5-hour unboxing policy).
  • ⚠️ Customs Risk Assumption: Buyer assumes 100% legal and financial risk for local customs clearance. LAG is VOID if seized by destination customs. Never release captive exotic ants into local ecosystems. Know your local import laws.
