Species Overview

Odontomachus goumang, officially discovered and named in 2025, is a spectacular new species commonly known as the Goumang Giant Trap-jaw Ant. It currently holds the title for the largest Odontomachus species in China and ranks as the second-largest globally.

Sporting a glossy, jet-black exoskeleton with subtle dark brownish legs and antennae, they boast an incredibly imposing physique. Queens measure a massive 18–21 mm, while workers range from 15–17 mm. Their exceptionally large trap-jaws and distinctive raised propodeum make them a highly sought-after centerpiece for serious exotic pet keepers.

Natural Habitat & Behavior

Native to the humid, subtropical evergreen broadleaf forests of Guangxi, China, these ants thrive in deep, moist leaf litter and under shaded rocks. They are fierce, solitary hunters that rely on excellent vision and highly sensitive antennae to track down small arthropods.

Their most defining feature is their sub-millisecond trap-jaw mechanism. Capable of opening up to 270 degrees, the mandibles lock into place and strike with devastating speed to stun or kill prey, instantly followed by a venomous sting. When threatened, they can also use these powerful jaws to strike the ground, propelling themselves 30 to 40 cm backward through the air to escape predators!

Comprehensive Keeping Guidelines

Nest Type: We highly recommend soil nests, bioactive vivariums, or gypsum nests with a substrate layer. ⚠️ CRITICAL: The larvae absolutely require loose particles (like fine soil, sand, or coco coir) to use as a framework to spin their cocoons. Keeping them in bare acrylic or smooth glass tubes will result in pupation failure and larval death.

Temperature: Maintain an optimal range of 24–28°C (75–82°F) for maximum activity and brood development. Ensure temperatures stay above 20°C (68°F) during winter to prevent diapause.

Humidity: High moisture is mandatory. The nest interior must be kept at 60–80% RH. They are extremely moisture-loving, but ensure adequate ventilation to prevent mold and bacterial growth.

Foraging Area: Set up a relatively dry outworld separated from the damp nest. This prevents discarded food from molding quickly in high humidity.

Feeding & Nutrition

Primary Diet: Strictly carnivorous. They highly prefer live or freshly killed small insects, such as fruit flies, pinhead crickets, and small roaches. Queens are semi-claustral and require protein feeding during the founding stage.

Supplemental Nutrition: Provide diluted honey water or sugar water once a week for a quick carbohydrate energy boost.

Feeding Schedule: Feed small colonies every 2–3 days, and mature colonies every 1–2 days. Remove any uneaten prey within 24 hours to maintain sanitation.

Advanced Care Considerations

Cocoon Spinning Support: Always monitor the brood. If larvae are fully grown but failing to pupate, immediately add a thin layer of dry soil or sand nearby for them to use as a spinning medium.

Light Sensitivity: This species is highly photophobic (sensitive to light). Keep the nesting area completely darkened; sudden exposure to bright light will cause severe stress and prompt the colony to relocate.

Acclimation: New colonies may experience stress during transit. Allow 10–14 days for stabilization in a quiet, dark environment. Avoid unnecessary disturbances during this critical period.
