Species Overview

Camponotus angusticollis (Jerdon, 1851) is a large member of the subgenus Tanaemyrmex from the Indomalayan region. Published taxonomic records place the species and its recognized geographic forms across South and Southeast Asia, including India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Indonesia, Borneo, and other regional localities. Chinese records are also associated with the recognized C. angusticollis sanguinolentus form.

This species is immediately impressive because of its substantial body size and pronounced difference between minor and major workers. Taxonomic descriptions record minor workers at approximately 12–15 mm and major workers around 17–21 mm, with some captive populations producing particularly massive majors. Queens are also exceptionally large and visually imposing.

Distinctive “Narrow Neck”: The most characteristic form is especially obvious in minor workers. Their head becomes strongly constricted toward the rear, producing an elongated neck-like appearance that inspired the name angusticollis. Major workers are built very differently, with much broader heads and substantially heavier mandibles.

Origin Matters: Geographic variation exists within C. angusticollis and its recognized forms. Coloration, body proportions, worker size, activity, and captive behavior may differ between populations. When the exact collection or breeder locality is known, origin-specific observations should take priority over a generic species-wide care sheet.


Morphological Characteristics

Minor Workers: Minor workers are long-legged and comparatively slender, with a distinctly elongated head that narrows strongly behind the eyes. This pronounced posterior constriction creates the unusual “narrow-necked” appearance for which the species is best known.

Major Workers: Majors develop a much larger, broader head and powerful six-toothed mandibles. Their body proportions are considerably more robust than those of minor workers, giving mature colonies a dramatic visual contrast between worker forms.

Worker Size: Published descriptions place minor workers around 12–15 mm and majors around 17–21 mm. Larger captive individuals are sometimes reported by experienced keepers, but actual size can vary with geographic origin, nutrition, colony maturity, and individual development.

Coloration: Typical workers are predominantly dark brown to black, with some appendages showing lighter brown or yellow-brown tones. Geographic forms can differ, so coloration should not be treated as completely uniform across every population sold under this name.


Natural Habitat & Behavior

Camponotus angusticollis is associated with warm Indomalayan forest environments. Historical records include forest habitats in India as well as populations elsewhere in tropical South and Southeast Asia. The species is best treated as a large forest-associated carpenter ant rather than assigning every population to one exact nesting microhabitat.

Nesting: Colonies can make use of protected cavities associated with soil, roots, decaying wood, logs, bark, or other sheltered structures depending on geographic origin and local conditions. In captivity, the important requirement is a secure nest with adequate chamber size, reliable hydration, ventilation, and a usable moisture gradient.

Activity: Captive colonies are often most active under reduced light or during evening and nighttime periods. Keep the nesting area shaded and provide a normal day/night cycle rather than keeping the colony under constant bright illumination.

Worker Roles: Smaller workers perform much of the exploration, brood care, and routine foraging, while large majors contribute strongly to defense and processing larger or tougher food items. The dramatic difference between worker sizes becomes increasingly visible as a colony matures.

Defense: As a formicine ant, C. angusticollis does not possess a functional sting. Large majors can still deliver a strong bite and use formic-acid-based chemical defenses when disturbed, so direct handling is unnecessary.


Comprehensive Keeping Guidelines

Nest Type: Use a secure nest with chambers large enough to accommodate mature majors while still matching the current size of the colony. Ytong/AAC, gypsum, plaster, cork, wood-based, soil-based, or appropriately designed modular nests can all work. Avoid placing a very small colony into an excessively large nest simply because the species eventually becomes large.

Temperature: Approximately 24–28°C (75–82°F) is a practical starting range for most captive tropical stock. If additional heat is required, warm only part of the nest or outworld so the ants can move between warmer and cooler areas. Avoid sudden temperature changes and prolonged overheating.

Humidity: Maintain a humid retreat for the queen and brood while keeping other areas comparatively drier and well ventilated. A moisture gradient is preferable to maintaining the entire nest at one fixed RH percentage. Avoid both complete dehydration and permanently saturated chambers.

Foraging Area: Provide a spacious and secure outworld with enough clearance for large majors to move naturally. Bark, cork, branches, or other clean climbing structures can be added, but enclosure security should remain the priority.

Escape Security: Large workers are easy to notice, but smaller workers can exploit gaps that appear insignificant. Check tubing connections, lids, ventilation openings, and escape barriers carefully as the colony expands.


Feeding & Nutrition

Carbohydrates: Provide regular access to sugar water, diluted honey water, or another clean carbohydrate source. Adult Camponotus workers rely heavily on liquid carbohydrates for daily energy.

Protein: Offer clean feeder insects such as crickets, roaches, flies, mealworms, silkworm pieces, or other appropriately sized insects. Freshly killed or cut prey is suitable and is often easier for smaller colonies to process safely.

Termites: Termites can be accepted enthusiastically by some colonies and may be offered as an occasional prey item when obtained from a clean and safe source. They are not required for successful maintenance and should not be presented as an essential food.

Feeding Schedule: Maintain carbohydrates according to colony demand and offer insect protein several times per week as a practical starting point. Increase protein availability when the colony is raising substantial brood and reduce excess food when consumption is low.

Water: Fresh water should always remain available in a safe form. Sugar water should not be treated as the colony's only source of hydration.

Avoid Routine Human Foods: Cooked meat and other seasoned human foods are unnecessary. A clean diet based on feeder insects, carbohydrates, and fresh water is easier to control and reduces contamination risk.


Advanced Care Considerations

Major Development: One of the main attractions of C. angusticollis is watching increasingly large major workers appear as the colony matures. Major production depends on colony size, nutrition, brood condition, genetics, and overall stability. Do not attempt to force major production through excessive heat or overfeeding.

Colony Growth: This is better treated as a long-term display species than as a species that must expand explosively. Young colonies may develop steadily rather than rapidly, and growth speed can vary substantially between individual colonies and geographic populations.

Space Management: Because the difference between small workers and mature majors can be substantial, nest entrances, tubing, and internal chambers should be sized so that the largest workers can pass comfortably. Expansion should be gradual and based on actual colony growth.

Low Disturbance: Keep the nesting area shaded and avoid repeated opening, vibration, forced relocation, or unnecessary exposure of the brood chambers. Stable colonies generally provide better feeding responses and more natural behavior.

Origin-Specific Husbandry: If the colony's geographic origin is known, observe and preserve locality-specific information. Temperature preference, coloration, worker size, activity rhythm, growth rate, and other husbandry traits may differ between regional populations even when they are sold under the same species name.

Acclimation: After delivery, allow the colony several days to stabilize with minimal disturbance. Avoid immediate overheating, unnecessary handling, or forced relocation unless there is an immediate safety issue.
