Species Overview

Camponotus singularis (Smith, 1858) is a large Asian carpenter ant with a broad distribution extending from the Himalayan and mainland Asian regions through Southeast Asia to parts of the Sunda Islands. Published records include China, India, Nepal, Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia, and neighboring regions.

The species is immediately recognizable for its impressive size, reddish to deep-red head, and contrasting dark mesosoma and gaster. Exact coloration can vary noticeably between geographic populations, with some colonies displaying brighter red tones while others appear considerably darker.

Origin Matters: Geographic variation within C. singularis is significant. Populations from different parts of Asia can differ in coloration, body proportions, activity patterns, and other characteristics. When the locality of a colony is known, origin-specific observations should take priority over generalized care sheets.


Morphological Characteristics

True Worker Dimorphism: C. singularis is especially notable for having two strongly differentiated worker forms: minor workers and major workers. Rather than showing a smooth minor–media–major continuum, published morphometric research found a clear separation between the smaller and larger worker subcastes.

Minor Workers: Minor workers are comparatively slender, with elongated heads, proportionally long antennae and legs, and an agile build suited to exploration, foraging, brood care, and routine colony work.

Major Workers: Major workers are dramatically different in appearance. They develop an extremely large and broad head, heavy mandibles, and a much more robust body. Their exaggerated head morphology gives mature colonies one of the most impressive major-worker castes seen among commonly kept Asian Camponotus.

Size: Body size varies between geographic populations and individual workers. Minor workers are generally much smaller and more slender, while large majors and queens can approach approximately 18–20 mm, giving mature colonies a striking visual presence.


Natural Habitat & Behavior

Camponotus singularis occurs across warm forest environments over a broad geographic range. Records include evergreen forest, subtropical forest, montane forest, and other wooded habitats at different elevations. Because of this wide distribution, the species should not be reduced to one universal lowland tropical habitat profile.

Nesting: Depending on locality, colonies may use protected spaces associated with soil, decaying wood, bark, roots, or other sheltered cavities. Detailed nesting ecology can vary between populations, so a flexible captive setup is more appropriate than assuming every colony requires exactly the same nest structure.

Activity: Colonies generally prefer a shaded nesting area and often become more active when disturbance and direct light are reduced. Activity rhythm may vary by geographic origin, colony condition, temperature, and captive environment.

Defense: As a member of the subfamily Formicinae, C. singularis does not possess a functional sting. Workers can bite and use formic-acid-based chemical defenses when disturbed, particularly the much larger major workers. Direct handling is unnecessary and should be avoided.


Comprehensive Keeping Guidelines

Nest Type: A spacious but appropriately sized nest with good ventilation and a controllable moisture gradient is recommended. Ytong/AAC, gypsum, plaster, cork, wood-based, soil-based, or appropriately designed modular nests can all work. Chambers should provide enough clearance for large majors without forcing a small colony into excessive unused space.

Temperature: Approximately 24–28°C (75–82°F) is a practical starting range for most captive tropical and subtropical stock. If additional heat is used, warm only part of the setup so the colony can choose between warmer and cooler zones.

Humidity: Maintain a humid retreat for the queen and brood while allowing other parts of the nest to remain comparatively drier. Avoid both permanent saturation and complete dehydration. A moisture gradient is more useful than maintaining the entire nest at one fixed RH percentage.

Foraging Area: Provide a secure outworld with sufficient room for large workers to move comfortably. Cork, bark, branches, or other clean climbing structures can be added for enrichment, but escape security should remain the priority.


Feeding & Nutrition

Carbohydrates: Provide regular access to sugar water, diluted honey water, or another clean carbohydrate source. Adult Camponotus workers rely heavily on liquid carbohydrates for energy, and C. singularis generally responds well to sweet liquids in captivity.

Protein: Offer clean feeder insects such as crickets, roaches, flies, mealworms, or other appropriately sized insects. Freshly killed prey or cut insect pieces are also suitable, especially for smaller colonies that may be reluctant to attack large live prey.

Feeding Schedule: Keep carbohydrates available according to colony demand and offer insect protein several times per week as a practical starting point. Increase or reduce protein according to brood load, worker number, temperature, and actual consumption rather than following one rigid schedule.

Water: Fresh water should always remain available in a safe form. Sugar solution should not be treated as the colony's only source of hydration.


Advanced Care Considerations

Major Development: The appearance of the first large majors is one of the most rewarding stages of keeping this species. Major production depends on colony maturity, nutrition, brood condition, and overall stability. It should not be forced through excessive feeding or overheating.

Early Colony Growth: Young C. singularis colonies are often described by experienced keepers as relatively steady rather than explosively fast during early development. Avoid unnecessary nest expansion, repeated relocation, or constant disturbance simply because a young colony is developing gradually.

Geographic Variation: When the exact locality of a colony is known, locality-specific observations should take priority over generic species-wide assumptions. Coloration, temperature response, nesting preference, activity rhythm, body proportions, and other traits may differ between regional populations.

Low Disturbance: Keep the nesting area shaded and avoid frequent opening, vibration, or direct exposure of the brood chambers. Observation through the outworld is preferable to repeatedly disturbing the colony inside its nest.

Acclimation: After delivery, allow the colony several days to stabilize with minimal disturbance. Complete the required continuous unboxing video first, then provide fresh water, carbohydrates, and appropriately sized insect protein. Avoid immediate overheating, repeated handling, or forced relocation unless there is an immediate safety issue.
