Species Overview

Cataglyphis bombycina, commonly known as the Saharan Silver Ant, is a desert specialist famed for its extreme heat tolerance and lightning-fast foraging speed. Covered with highly reflective, silvery hairs that reduce solar heating, workers are built to sprint across scorching sand to scavenge insects during the hottest part of the day.

This species prefers very dry, well-ventilated nests and thrives with a warm, bright foraging area. Due to its incredible speed, extreme sensitivity to moisture, and unique thermal ecology, it is best suited for intermediate to advanced keepers who enjoy desert setups and precise environmental control.

Natural Habitat & Behavior

Native to the arid Sahara and adjacent deserts, the Saharan Silver Ant builds shallow to medium-depth sand nests with high airflow. Foraging is typically diurnal, peaking at the absolute hottest times of the day. Workers navigate by visual cues and quickly return to the nest as surface temperatures drop.

Colonies are weakly polymorphic, usually with slender workers (5–10 mm) and a single queen. Their diet consists primarily of scavenged arthropods and sugars; they do not exhibit seed-storage behavior. Their hallmark challenges in captivity are escape risks, over-moisture stress, and the need for a stark heat/light contrast between the nest and the outworld.

Comprehensive Keeping Guidelines

Nest Type: Traditional setups often fail this species due to poor airflow. We highly recommend our specialized 3D-printed modular nests. Designed strictly for high utility and organism survival, our nests provide the robust ventilation required to keep the overall environment bone-dry, while allowing for precise, micro-moisture pockets specifically for the brood.

Temperature: Maintain the nest at 24–30Β°C (75–86Β°F), while providing a dedicated basking zone in the outworld that reaches 32–40Β°C (90–104Β°F) to trigger natural foraging activity.

Humidity: Overall humidity must remain very low (20–40% RH). Only lightly moisten one specific brood pocket (40–50% RH) and keep the entire foraging area absolutely dry.

Foraging Area: Require a wide, open outworld with fine sand substrate. Because they are incredibly fast runners and capable climbers, a highly secure escape barrier band (10–15 mm) is mandatory.

Feeding & Nutrition

Primary Diet: Small insect prey or freshly killed insect pieces (mealworms, crickets, roaches). They do not store seeds.

Supplemental Nutrition: Offer 10–15% sugar water or honey water on small pieces of foil. Remove liquids after 2–4 hours to prevent accidental spills and mold growth.

Feeding Schedule: Offer protein 2–3 times a week. Provide tiny droplets of sugars constantly, replacing them frequently. Ensure all feeding points are kept far away from any moist nest areas.

Advanced Care Considerations

Heat & Light Contrast: Provide a bright heat lamp over the outworld to simulate midday desert foraging, but ensure it does not shine directly into the nesting chambers. They need shaded, cooler retreats.

Moisture Sensitivity: Avoid high humidity and standing water at all costs. Over-hydration is lethal to this desert specialist.

Acclimation: After arrival, keep the colony quiet, dry, and stable for 7–10 days. Start with a small heat lamp window on a low setting. Offer tiny sugar droplets first, introducing small proteins after day 3. Minor worker loss during transit is normal.
