Species Overview

Ooceraea biroi (Forel, 1907), commonly known as the Clonal Raider Ant, is unusual because natural colonies lack a conventional queen caste. Adult females are morphologically worker-like and have reproductive potential, with colonies reproducing asexually through thelytokous parthenogenesis.

Rather than producing offspring that are perfectly genetically identical in every case, O. biroi reproduces through an automictic mechanism that preserves extremely high relatedness among nestmates. Its queenless social organization, synchronized reproduction, and experimentally manageable colonies have made it one of the best-studied model ants for research on social evolution, division of labor, behavior, and development.


Natural Habitat & Behavior

Ooceraea biroi is a small, largely subterranean or leaf-litter-associated doryline ant. Its probable native range is in mainland Southeast Asia, but it has spread widely as a tramp species and is now recorded from China, Taiwan, Japan, South and Southeast Asia, numerous tropical islands, and other introduced regions.

Synchronized Colony Cycle: Colonies alternate between a reproductive phase and a brood-care/foraging phase. Adults lay eggs synchronously when larvae are absent. After larvae hatch, larval signals suppress adult reproduction and stimulate brood care and foraging. When larvae later pupate, adults transition back toward reproductive activity.

Group Raiding: O. biroi is a specialized predator of other ants' brood and performs coordinated, scout-initiated group raids. It can also attack some other small, soft-bodied prey, but ant brood is the best-established food source in both research colonies and natural-history literature.

Pupal Social Fluid: Research using O. biroi discovered that late-stage pupae release a nutrient-rich moulting fluid that is consumed by adults and young larvae. This fluid plays an important social and nutritional role within the colony and is one of the species' most fascinating documented biological traits.


Comprehensive Keeping Guidelines

Nest Type: Because the workers are very small, use a compact, highly escape-secure setup. Moist plaster, gypsum, small soil-based chambers, or appropriately designed micro-nests can work well if gaps and ventilation openings are too small for workers to escape. A simple setup is often safer than an unnecessarily complex nest.

Temperature: Approximately 24–26°C (75–79°F) is a practical starting range. Research colonies are commonly maintained around 25°C. Avoid prolonged overheating, chilling, or sudden temperature swings.

Humidity: Maintain a consistently humid nesting zone without standing water or heavy condensation. Laboratory colonies are commonly kept on moistened plaster, demonstrating that this is not a dry-adapted species. A humid nest combined with adequate ventilation is a reliable starting approach.

Foraging Area: A compact outworld is sufficient for small colonies. Pay close attention to lid seams, ventilation mesh, tubing connections, and escape barriers because the workers can exploit extremely small openings.


Feeding & Nutrition

Primary Diet: The most reliable food is brood from other ant species, especially small larvae and pupae. Laboratory cultures of O. biroi are routinely maintained on fire-ant or other suitable ant brood.

Alternative Prey: Small soft-bodied insects or appropriately sized insect pieces may be tested, but acceptance can vary. A dependable supply of feeder-ant brood is strongly recommended if you want to maintain the colony long term.

Carbohydrates: Sugar water and honey are not required as the core diet. Published laboratory husbandry routinely maintains healthy colonies using ant brood and water without a separate sugar source. If you experiment with additional foods, offer only tiny amounts and remove anything ignored or spoiled.

Feeding Schedule: Feeding demand changes with the synchronized colony cycle. Protein demand is highest during the brood-care/foraging phase when larvae are present. As a practical starting point, offer appropriate ant brood several times per week during active larval periods and adjust according to colony size and actual consumption.


Advanced Care Considerations

Queenless Reproduction: Do not search for a conventional queen in the colony. Normal O. biroi colonies consist of worker-like females with reproductive potential, and reproduction is synchronized by the colony's brood cycle.

Brood-Cycle Observation: Periods with little or no egg laying are not automatically signs of colony failure. The presence of larvae naturally suppresses adult reproduction. Watching the colony shift between reproductive and brood-care phases is one of the most distinctive aspects of keeping this species.

Small Colony Foundation: Controlled research has shown that very small groups can function and reproduce, but success still depends on adequate moisture, food, brood-cycle condition, and worker health. Do not treat a tiny starting group as automatically self-sustaining.

Acclimation: After delivery, allow the colony several days to stabilize in a compact, humid, low-disturbance setup. Provide water and suitable prey according to the colony's brood stage, and avoid forced relocation unless there is an immediate safety issue.
